Use the Right Kind of Washer

Your first instinct is probably to get the hose out and simply spray the siding down. That can work to remove some of the dirt and grim, but it might not get it all, especially in higher areas. You need to be careful using a higher-pressure washer, though, because if the spray is too intense, it can damage the siding.

The ideal tool is a garden hose with a spray nozzle or a pressure washer set to a medium setting. Use a wide spray pattern to avoid damage, and keep the spray moving at all times. Start your spray at the bottom and work your way up. Then go from the top back down. By the time you’re done most dirt and residue should be gone.

Mix Up a Secret Solution

Some cleaning jobs might require an extra grime fighter, but you don’t want to use a harsh chemical cleaner that will damage the siding. We like to use the following solution:

• 1 gallon of water
• 1/3 cup powdered laundry detergent
• 2/3 cup trisodium phosphate (TSP) cleaner – can be found at most home improvement stores.

Mix the solution up in a bucket, and use a long-handled, soft bristle brush to gently scrub the siding. Work your way from the bottom up, then use a garden hose to spray the solution off working from the top down. You will want to wear gloves and wear a long sleeved shirt when doing this.

Fight Back Against Mold and Mildew

In humid climates like ours, vinyl siding will occasionally develop mold and mildew. The telltale signs are greenish patches with darker spots inside them. If you notice this problem on your siding, the solution is easy:

• Buy a commercial mold/mildew remover, and mix it with one quart of household bleach.
• Cover any plants close to where you are working to avoid damage from the bleach.
• Use a pump sprayer to apply the solution to the affected areas.
• Let it sit for 10 minutes, then scrub it with your soft bristle brush.
• Rinse the area down with a garden hose working from top to bottom
